“I Play a Queen’s Gambit Against M. Duchamp”
Abstract Expressionist, Spear, likes to think of himself as a visual composer and compares his creative process and his paintings to music. Just as a musical composer uses the audio elements, such as form, pitch, timbre, volume, harmony, and duration to create a musical composition, Spear uses the elements of visual art, like color, value, intensity, shape, and line to create his paintings. Utilizing all of these elements of visual design, his paintings are a powerful artistic statement.
A former art instructor at Broward Community College and Florida Atlantic University, Spear’s paintings have been shown in over 70 major competitive shows, including the prestigious Contemporary American Painting Show and the M. Allen Hortt Memorial Competition. In addition, the artist has given demonstrations and has juried art shows at many Florida art institutions.
